Навагодняя малітва па - беларуску

Я ніколі ня думаў, што буду вучыць беларускаму вымаўленьню амэрыканскага прэзыдэнта, а ён старанна будзе паўтараць «кан-ды-да-тыў-прэ-зы-дэн-ты-бе-ла-ру-сі». Як ніхто зь сямідзесяці чатырох удзельнікаў гэтай самай неверагоднай перадачы Радыё Свабода за ўсю гісторыю яго існаваньня ня думаў, што ў цэнтры Эўропы напрыканцы 2010 году можна за адну ноч арыштаваць сем афіцыйных прэтэндэнтаў на найвышэйшую пасаду краіны і больш за семсот іх мірных прыхільнікаў.

Самае галоўнае слова для чалавека — ягонае імя. Так пабудаваная пошукавая сыстэма цывілізацыі, так яна працуе ўсюды, ад запісу ў пасьведчаньні аб нараджэньні да запісу ў пасьведчаньні кандыдата ў прэзыдэнты Беларусі, ад пераклічкі ў турэмнай камэры да радка памінальнай малітвы.

Ніводнаму з удзельнікаў «Галасоў салідарнасьці» з трох кантынэнтаў ня трэба было доўга тлумачыць, чаму мы просім іх прачытаць дзесяць імёнаў невядомых ім людзей — міністры і паэты, філёзафы і сьвятары, мастакі і кінарэжысэры, кангрэсмэны і рок-музыкі, былыя прэзыдэнты, кіраўнікі ўрадаў у ноч на Новы 2011 год гаварылі па-беларуску, і супраць гэтых словаў былі бясьсільныя шчыты і дубінкі, краты і турэмныя муры, генэралы і іхні галоўнакамандуючы.

Гэтыя імёны і прозьвішчы ў ноч на Новы 2011 год чуваць было ў любым месцы зямной кулі. Гэты кароткі акустычны сыгнал пра сем сотняў сярод сямі мільярдаў зямлянаў азначаў толькі адно — пра вас не забыліся, вы былі, вы ёсьць.

Ня больш.

І ня менш.

A New Year’s Eve Prayer in Belarusian

The most powerful act of international solidarity with the people of independent Belarus in its history happened in the waning hours of the year 2010. It was also perhaps the simplest and most remarkable broadcast in Radio Liberty's almost 60-year history.

On December 19, 2010, Belarus – the last dictatorship in Europe, held a presidential election. That day ended with one man claiming, as usual, an overwhelming victory no matter how dubious, and seven official candidates beaten and arrested along with more than 700 of their peaceful supporters.

As a journalist, I have worked in earthquake and war zones, reported from parliaments and mass protests, argued with KGB generals and interviewed Nobel laureates. Still, I could never have imagined that I would one day be coaching a former U.S. president over the phone on how to pronounce Belarusian words for a radio broadcast – let alone that he would obediently (and with respectable pronunciation) repeat after me: «kandy-da-tyu pre-zy-den-ty be-laru-si».

Of all the words in the universe, the most important to any one person is his or her own name. Civilizations everywhere organize their «search engines» accordingly, from the print on birth certificates, university diplomas, and election ballots, to the roll call of prison inmates and prayers for the dead.

None of the 74 participants of the «Voices of Solidarity» required long explanations as to why they were asked to recite the names of people they had never met. They understood: these people in prison must be remembered. And so, on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2010, ministers and poets, philosophers and priests, painters and film directors, congressmen and rock musicians, former presidents and heads of state from three continents all spoke the names of those arrested. In Belarusian. And neither police truncheons nor shields, prison bars nor walls, generals nor their commander in chief could stop them.

On that New Year’s Eve, these names were broadcast online and on radio and could be heard anywhere on the planet. This small audio fingerprint of 700 souls in a universe of 7 billion meant only one thing: «You have not been forgotten – you were, you are, you count».

Nothing more.

And nothing less.

Это вы правильно SportsmenPan заметили. Во всём мире требуют подчинения законам. И в США тоже. Но там никому в голову не придёт за разбитое провокаторами, анархистами, психами стекло какого бы ни было здания
- избивать дубинками многотысячную толпу мирных демонстрантов.
- Арестовывать и отдавать под суд 700 человек, никакого отношения не имеющих к этому стеклу. 99% которых даже не знавших, что оно где-то было разбито.
- Вылавливать людей похожих демонстрантов на протяжении нескольких часов и избивать их.
- Арестовывать не оказывающих сопротивления, убегающих от избиения или случайных прохожих.
- Избивать и арестовывать молодых девчёнок, старушек, детей, инвалидов.
- Пугать матерей лишением материнских прав за участие в демонстрации.
- Избивать конкурентов на выборах ещё до начала митинга, выкрадывать их из больницы в одеяле, и забрасывать в тюрьму. Стены которой пропитаны кровью сотен тысяч невинных людей.
- Арестовывать конкурентов, принявших и не принявших участие в митинге. Предварительно избив их. Не оказывавших сопротивления.
- Запугивать их и требовать публичного предательства и покаяния.
- Арестовывать и бросать в политическую тюрьму журналистов.
- Избивать журналистов и разбивать их камеры.
И это ещё не весь перечень преступлений за которые в демократических странах Лукашенко и его прихвостням пришлось бы ответить по закону.
Такое может быть в Зимбабве, Иране, Бирме. Или Беларуси.
Но не в тех странах на которые вы намекаете. Не в США и странах Европы.
Отдавший приказ на такие избиения и аресты и те кто исполнял их в этих странах были бы немедленно арестованы.
Полиция в тех странах, на которые вы обижаетесь, господин MensportPan, научена быстро и профессионально арестовывать буянов, бьющих витрины, бросающих коктеиль Молотова.
Остальных зачем. Нет смысла. Пусть демонстрирует себе.

Гэта вельмі важна і для тых 700, і для тых хто быў на Плошчы, але каторым пашанцавала не трапіць у "лапы ўлады", і для тых, хто па тых ці іншых прычынах перажываў за тыя 30-40 тысяч сьмелых дома. Шкада толькі, што пачуюць гэта не ўсе, што не пачуюць тыя, хто слухае і верыць толькі БТ і г.д. Яны не чытаюць гэты сайт і слухаюць гэта радые (слухаюць толькі тыя, каму гэта патрэбна па працы...).

Where were they when the officially registered presidential candidates called on people on TV and radio to violate the laws of the Republic of Belarus?
Where were they when the Prosecutor General’s Office officially warned the candidates and explained the essence of the violation?
Where in the end were all those whose names are now being read when police AUDIBLY explained to them how they violated the laws of the Republic of Belarus and called on them to quietly, peacefully, GO HOME?
Or, Mr. Bush, do you think that the laws of the United States need to be strictly obeyed while those of the Republic of Belarus need not?
If you don’t like the laws of the Republic of Belarus, run for a deputy seat in the legislature of the Republic of Belarus and change them!
And if you are not elected to this legislature, obey the LAWS in force. Exactly as you would in the home country of Mr. Bush!

If you know names and facts of falsifications, do not hesitate to inform law-enforcement authorities about them, bring them to court, for instance, to the International Court of Human Rights!
But you will have to sign a note “I have been advised about responsibility for giving false evidence.”
I think this is the reason why there are many people speaking about falsifications on Internet forums but there are no appeals to courts.

You are right in noting that, SportsmenPan. People all over the world are demanded to obey laws. Including the United States. But there, for the windows broken by provocateurs, anarchists, and geeks in any building, it never occurs to anybody:
-- beat a crowd of many thousands of peaceful demonstrators with truncheons;
-- arrest and bring to court 700 people who had no relations at all to the said windows. 99 percent of them even did not know that some windows were broken somewhere;
-- hunt for people resembling demonstrators for several hours and beat them;
-- arrest accidental passers-by;
-- beat and arrest young girls, old women, children, and disabled people;
-- intimidate mothers by threatening to rescind their maternal rights to their children for participation in a rally;
-- beat contenders in the elections even before the rally, kidnap them wrapped in a blanket from hospital, and imprison them;
-- intimidate the contenders and demand public penance and betrayal from them;
-- arrest and imprison journalists;
-- beat journalists and break their cameras.
And this list of offences is far from being full. In democratic countries, Lukashenka and his henchmen would be held accountable before the law.
Such things may happen in Zimbabwe, Iran, Birma. And in Belarus. But not in the countries you allude to. Not in the US or European countries.
Those who ordered such beatings and arrests and those who obeyed such orders would be immediately arrested there.
Police in the countries that you resent, Mr. MensportPan, are trained to quickly and professionally apprehend brawlers, window breakers, Molotov-coctail throwers. There is no need to arrest the others. There is no sense. Let them demonstrate.

Thanks for solidarity! It is very important both for those 700 and for those who were on the Square but escaped “the clutches of the authorities”, and for those who, for various reasons, stayed at home but felt deeply for those 30-40 thousand couragoues people. It is a pity that not everybody will listen to this, that this list will not be heard by those who only listen to, and believe in, Belarusian TV. They do not read your site and listen to your program.

Who has proposed this idea? It’s simply super. Well done, Svaboda!!! You provide strong support for political prisoners. At 11.45 we switched off television in order not to listen to the usurper, switched off the lights in our apartment, lighted the candles as a token of solidarity with the political prisoners, and listened to the names of our heroes several times, there are many of our friends among them, and this was how we met the New Year of 2011. Thanks for all those public persons around the world who responded to this action.

An outstanding action of support indeed! Thanks you, Svaboda, for the project! People should feel that they have not been left alone.
I propose that the editorial team make a series of interviews with politicians, representatives of political movements and parties who have taken a position of principle on the events in Belarus. In the end the Belarusian democratic opposition and community should know who among the Western and Eastern politicians are true supporters of democratic changes and advocates of democratic freedoms in Belarus. I will be grateful if my proposal is accepted by the editorial team. I propose that this series be inaugurated by an interview with Italian radicals. This is one of the very few political parties in Italy, which always takes a principled stance and defends human rights in the entire world.

In an ice-covered parking lot of a suburban supermarket.

After a far-away caller I repeat the names of Belarusian citizens who were detained following the presidential elections won by a dictator with the overwhelming majority of votes. Connection is poor and I can hardly hear some of those names, so I repeat them as one repeats foreign words during a language course for beginners.

It is New Year’s Eve, people around me are pushing their shopping carts on the ice-slick, trying not to fall over. There will be celebration in the evening, but now I pronounce the names of unfamiliar people. If anybody in the parking lot hears me, what does he think of me?

A few moments later I fill the trunk of my car with plastic boxes of pineapple compote, plastic boxes of peach compote, a package of dried plums, a can of black Irish beer, three cans of carbonated orange juice... I remember everything for what I have paid.

While closing the trunk, I still remember two of the ten names I have pronounced. Let them be remembered, let them be released... One Svetlana and one Viktor. But I have forgotten their last names. As for the others, I don’t remember even their first names.

Soon I will forget these two, too.

It happens like that when a man is free to such an extent that he, as a token of support in an ice-covered parking lot of a suburban supermarket, can pronounce the names of those who are not free.

Europe is free only on the radio.

Ідэя перадачы «Галасы салідарнасьці» нарадзілася, калі да Новага 2011 году заставалася 100 гадзінаў.

У яе падмурку ляжала праца праваабарончых арганізацыяў і групаў у Беларусі, якія апэратыўна складалі і ўдакладнялі сьпісы арыштаваных у ноч на 19 сьнежня і публікавалі іх у інтэрнэце.

Гэтую перадачу немагчыма было б зрабіць без ахвярнай працы цэлага шэрагу людзей у Менску, Празе і Вашынгтоне, якія надалі ёй глябальны маштаб і ўсясьветную пэрспэктыву.

Сапраўднае лідэрства ўзяў на сябе прэзыдэнт Нацыянальнага фонду дэмакратыі ЗША Карл Гершман, які адразу падтрымаў ідэю і шчодра дзяліўся кантактамі і прапановамі. Амаль кругласутачна ў апошнія дні году Карл падтрымліваў сувязь з Радыё Свабода, сам зьвязваўся зь лідэрамі дэмакратыі ў сьвеце, дамаўляўся на запіс і настойліва пашыраў кола тых, хто, на яго думку, павінен быў выказаць салідарнасьць. Яго бясспрэчны міжнародны аўтарытэт і дапамога супрацоўнікаў Фонду рабілі цуды.

Цяжка пераацаніць унёсак, які зрабілі калегі Джэф Гедмін, Даяна Зэлены, Марцінс Званэрс, Павел Пегачэк і, вядома, супрацоўнікі Беларускай службы — нястомныя, адданыя і прафэсійныя, як заўсёды.

Acknowledgments

The idea for the «Voices of Solidarity» broadcast arose a mere 100 hours before the dawn of the new year 2011.

Human rights groups and organizations in Belarus sowed the seed for the project by gathering and confirming the names of all those detained on the night of December 19, and quickly publishing them on the internet.

The broadcast would not have been possible without the dedicated contributions of numerous individuals in Minsk, Prague and Washington, all of whom helped lend the project a global dimension and worldwide perspective.

First and foremost among these was Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy. Carl not only supported the project from the outset but also generously shared his ideas and suggested contacts. He was constantly in touch with RL during those waning hours of 2010 - informing us which world democratic leaders he was able to get on board, and even arranging recording sessions. His undisputed international reputation and the assistance of his colleagues at NED worked miracles.

Others who worked hard to make «Voices of Solidarity» a reality were RFE/RL colleagues Jeff Gedmin, Pavel Pechacek, Diane Zeleny, Martins Zvaners, and the entire Belarus Service team – tireless, dedicated and professional as always.
